Job Description:

The Paraprofessional will assist teachers with classroom lessons, activities, organization, and management, as well as assisting special needs students. The Paraprofessional's responsibilities include assisting the teacher with teaching new concepts or translating information for students to understand better, supervising students, and providing students with a positive, nurturing guide. The Paraprofessional will deal with students, parents, staff, and the community in a professional manner, and follow and uphold school rules and standards.


II. DUTIES & ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Participate in lesson planning sessions, and communicating with parents and school officials.
  • Co-teach lessons under the Teacher's guidance, leading small groups or individual instruction and discussions, and reviewing classwork.
  • Organize the classroom and teaching materials, monitor the classroom during lessons, and minimize distractions and disruptions.
  • Supervise students in and out of the classroom.
  • Attend to students' physical, personal, academic, and emotional needs.
  • Assist Teachers and students with extracurricular activities and school functions.
  • Perform clerical duties, such as tracking student attendance, typing, filing, photocopying, and grading tests and homework.
  • Ensure the upkeep of educational materials, equipment, and supplies.
  • Track students' progress and prepare reports for the parents.
  • Assist Teachers in counseling parents on the requirements and development of their children.
  • Participate in ongoing professional development activities, plan field trips, and/or other activities.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Principal.

III. BASIC COMPETENCIES

Education and Experience:         

  • Must meet No Child Left Behind requirements for para-professionals (specifically an associates or higher degree; OR 60 college credits; OR achieve passing scores on an equivalent state-approved assessment demonstrating knowledge of and ability to assist in instructing reading, writing, and mathematics).
  • Experience working with children and special needs students.

Knowledge Requirements:

  • Basic reading, writing, and communications skills as acquired through a high school diploma or its equivalent.
  • Recent First Aid and CPR certifications.

Skills and Abilities Needed:

  • Effectively provide instruction for children with behavioral and emotional issues.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Demonstrate patience, compassion, and empathy when dealing with students, as well as professionalism when representing the school.
  • Exhibit strong management and organizational skills.
  • Build positive, collaborative relationships with parents/guardians/caregivers.
  • Relate to students and gain their respect and confidence.
  • Manage time and multiple priorities, meet deadlines.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, other agencies and the public.
  • Exercise professional judgment in making decisions.
  • Handle sensitive and confidential situations and documentation.

The work environment described here is representative of that which an employee will typically encounter during a normal shift.  Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.  Work involves rotating between workstations where children are studying and requires walking or standing for extended periods of time in a residential or office setting.
