Job Functions, Duties, Responsibilities and Position
Qualifications:Position Summary:Prepares histologic slides from
human tissue sections for microscopic examination and diagnosis by
Pathologist.Duties & Responsibilities:
- Exercise independent judgment in dealing with procedural and
technical problems.
- Examine slides and/or blocks to ensure tissue preparation is
meeting laboratory requirements. Trains or directs Laboratory
Assistants and Histology Technicians engaged in laboratory testing
and processing techniques.
- Prepare sections of human tissue for microscopic examination
and patient diagnosis, using techniques to gross (dissect tissue),
embed (orient specimen in paraffin block), section (cut thin
sections of tissue), stain (enhance contrast of tissue and
highlight specific features of interest with routine hematoxylin
and eosin stains), and mount tissue (adhere tissue onto glass
slides), from surgical procedures.
- Perform recuts and additional stains including special and
immunohistochemistry stains, as requested by a Pathologist.
- Label requisitions, specimen containers, cassettes and/or
slides and affixes coverslip to slides.
- Maintain laboratory equipment and tracks all routine
maintenance and quality controls performed.
- File, retrieve, and distribute blocks, slides, and pathology
reports.
- Operate, clean and sterilizes laboratory equipment, glassware,
instruments and workstation.
- Dispose of hazardous chemical waste per regulatory
guidelines.
- Maintain strictest confidentiality.
- Comply with all State, Federal, professional regulations as
well as company and departmental rules, polices, and procedural
manuals. Adherence to CAP, CLIA, State Regulations, HIPAA, Safety
and OSHA Regulations. Performs other duties as assigned.Education
and Experience:
- Bachelor's Degree - Laboratory Science or equivalent under the
1988 Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) guidelines
of high complexity testing preferred.
- One year full time grossing experience preferred.
- State licensure, if applicable. Certified or eligible for Board
of Certification (BOC) by the American Society of Clinical
Pathologists (ASCP).
- Completion of a Histology program accredited by the National
Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences (NAACLS) or one
year minimum experience (preferred) or minimum of one (1) year
experience as a full-time Histology Technician Trainee and
competent in the areas of fixation, processing, embedding,
microtomy, grossing, special stains, immunohistochemistry, and lab
operations.
- Successful completion of a pre-employment visual color
discrimination test is required.
- Successful completion of annual education units per state
licensure and/or ASCP guidelines.Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

- Handle difficult situations involving patients, physicians, or
others in a professional manner.
- Establish and maintain positive relationships with employees,
physicians, vendors, clients, and external agencies.
- Demonstrate knowledge of medical terminology related to blood
collection.
- Operate medical tools and equipment in carrying out phlebotomy
procedures.
- Maintain confidentiality of employee, patient, client, and
company information
- Demonstrate commitment to compliance with applicable laws:
federal and state regulations, including CAP, CLIA, HIPAA, Safety,
and OSHA Regulations.
- Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite or related
software.Physical Requirements: -
- Frequent standing, walking, grasping, carrying, and
talking.
- Occasional sitting, reaching, bending, stooping, and handling
objects with hands and/or fingers.
- Light to medium lifting and carrying of objects weighing up to
30-40 pounds.
- Requires visual acuity.Work Conditions:
- Environmentally controlled laboratory and medical office
environment with constant exposure to biological, sharp
instruments, and chemical hazards. -
- Fast-paced environment with occasional high pressure or
emergent situations. -
- Ability to adapt easily to changing work schedules and work
overtime occasionally, as needed.Reporting Structure: Reports to
the Histology Manager; no direct reports.Scheduled Weekly
